Swansea Metal Detecting Club has been in existence for 37 years, membership is open to all and we currently have approx 70 members. We are affiliated to the National Council for Metal Detecting (NCMD) and all members have public liability insurance cover for up to £10,000,000. We are always eager for people new to the hobby to join us and we offer friendly advice and guidance on all aspects of metal detecting.
We hold fortnightly meetings in Swansea and we hold regular rallies on local farms where we have permission from the landowners. We also have permission for our members to use a number of farms on an individual basis at anytime and there are regular excursions by groups of members to these venues. Many members regularly detect on the local beaches and during the winter months we also have permission from Swansea City Council for club members to detect in many of the parks around Swansea.
We are always very keen to liaise with local archaeological organisations and the finds Liaison Officer from Glamorgan and Gwent Archaeology Trust attends our meeting once a month to view member’s finds and to record those of interest for the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Members of the club have also assisted as volunteers on the Welsh Battlefields Survey undertaken by CADW, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. The club also has a number of displays at Swansea museum and members attend many historical events to display finds of interest. The club is also frequently asked to assist with the recovery of lost valuables, especially wedding and engagement rings, which we are always pleased to do and over the years we have had a number of successes doing this.
