Not all treasure is lost by pirates!

The last few years has seen a resurgence in the number of metal detectorists. The hobby has been promoted by some spectacular finds of both archaeological and financial value. A record number of finds have been reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the body set up by the British Museum to encourage recording of archaeological discoveries. It’s a great time to discover your inner metal detectorist.

Not all detectorists join clubs. However, being part of a well-run and active body like the Swansea Metal Detecting Club has advantages. We’ve been around for nearly forty years so we have a lot of experience. With us you’ll not only be a part of an enthusiastic community, you get the opportunity to socialise on frequent rallies as well as to compare and discuss your finds with your peers. A club can guide you through pit falls too. The SMDC has high standards and, as an affiliated member of the National Council for Metal Detecting, tries to make certain our members do everything by the book while enjoying the hobby to the full.

We’ve had some great finds over the years. But it’s not about the financial value of a find, it’s the history. When you stoop down and retrieve a hammered coin from a hole in the soil you can’t help but wonder about the time and circumstances of its owner, how it was earned and of course, it’s loss. It’s fair to say you’ll discover your share of silver foil and ring pulls but the camaraderie of our club even makes that bearable.

You won’t know until you try it for yourself

In May, the SMDC will be offering the opportunity to anyone to come along and try this fascinating hobby out for themselves. Young or old, it doesn’t matter. Club members will be there to guide you through the basics and, with luck on your side, you may find something in our special pasture, seeded with tokens for the event.

We’ll have some light refreshments, displays of finds made by club members and a competition or two to distract you in case there’s a queue!

Plenty of club members will be there to answer questions about the hobby and to share any knowledge they have about finds.

The event begins at 10:30. You can visit and be home in plenty of time for the Cup Final.
